Reading
The National Curriculum states that in Year Five pupils are expected to read a wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, and non-fiction fluently and with understanding. They develop deeper comprehension skills, including making inferences, summarising, and predicting, explain word meanings in context, analyse themes, characters, and authorial choices, retrieve information from non-fiction, and justify their opinions with evidence. Independent reading for pleasure and vocabulary development is encouraged, aiming to create confident, thoughtful, and analytical readers.
In Birchills we follow Ready Steady Read Together, our lessons follow the same teaching sequence and provides a detailed framework of how to move through the 3 step teaching sequence. Our lessons last 45 minutes and we have one lesson a day. Below is a breakdown of a typical lesson.
Writing
Year 5 writing focuses on pupils being able to write clearly, accurately, and coherently for a range of purposes and audiences. They should plan, draft, and organise their writing into structured paragraphs, using a wide range of sentence structures, including complex and varied sentences. Pupils are expected to use punctuation accurately, including commas, brackets, dashes, apostrophes for possession, and inverted commas for speech. Spelling should be largely accurate, including words with prefixes, suffixes, and commonly misspelt words. Handwriting should be fluent and legible, with consistent use of joined writing. Pupils should also revise and edit their work to improve clarity, grammar, and vocabulary, developing independence, creativity, and confidence in their writing.
At Birchills we want all children to enjoy becoming writers so we cultivate a love of writing through our vocabulary rich and high quality literature using Ready Steady Write by Literacy Counts. Ready Stedy Write uses an engagiong and vocabulary rich texts to create a wealth of writing oportunities. The Books we use in Year Five are:
Maths
In Year 5, maths focuses on developing fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. Pupils work confidently with large numbers, calculations, fractions, decimals, and percentages, understand shapes and measurements, interpret data, and apply their knowledge to solve problems, building independence and the ability to explain their reasoning. At Birchills we follow Oak National Academy, this curriculum develops pupils understanding of mathematics over time so they become confident in identifying and perfoming the mathematics they need both at school and in their daily lives.

Reading for pleasure can lower stress levels, increase empathy and improve academic success. We ask that you encourage your child to read at home and create a love for reading.
