Performance Data

Attainment data for our academy is collected, published and compared nationally for EYFS outcomes, Phonics, Multiplication Screening in Year 4 and at the end of Key Stage 2. Within our academy we collect data termly and use it to identify gaps and support teaching. Data shared on this page reflects what is submitted to the Department for Education during the summer term.

Early Years - Good Level of Development

Early Years teaching in Nursery and Reception is crucial because it lays the foundations for every child’s future learning, wellbeing and success. During these formative years, children develop the core skills, attitudes and behaviours that shape how they approach school and the wider world. High-quality Early Years provision supports language development, early reading and maths, social skills, emotional regulation, curiosity and independence. It also identifies early barriers to learning so that support can be put in place quickly, ensuring children are able to thrive as they move through school.

A key outcome measure in Reception is the Good Level of Development (GLD). GLD is achieved when a child meets the expected standard in the prime areas of learning—Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development—as well as in Literacy and Mathematics. It indicates that a child is well prepared for the demands of Year 1 and beyond.

Our 2024 Ofsted report recognised the good practice that takes place in Early Years at Birchills and states, 'A well-planned curriculum and purposeful learning opportunities provide the youngest children with a strong start. Well-trained staff support children in the key areas of learning within early reading, writing and mathematics. Routines are quicklyestablished. Children form positive relationships.'

Children learn to read as soon

At Birchills we are really proud of the approach we take to teaching reading and this was recognised in our Ofsted inspection in 2024 as our report states, 'Children learn to read as soon as they begin attending the school. Staff receive training so that they can deliver a highly structured reading curriculum. Pupils learn the sounds they need to know and read books that are well matched to their ability. Some less confident readers are still developing their reading fluency but enjoy hearing their teachers read a range of stories from inspiring authors.' Our Phonics data - as shown in the table below - has consistently improved for 3 years which shows that we are consistently improving and ensuring our children can read fluently. .

Multiplication Check - Year 4

Fluency in times tables is essential because it underpins a child’s confidence and success across the maths curriculum. Secure recall of multiplication facts allows pupils to access more complex concepts—such as division, fractions, area, ratio and problem-solving—without cognitive overload. When children know their times tables automatically, they can focus on reasoning and applying their understanding rather than working out basic facts, leading to stronger progress overall.

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), taken in Year 4, is a statutory assessment designed to ensure pupils have rapid and accurate recall of all multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. The check helps teachers identify any gaps early, enabling targeted support before children enter upper Key Stage 2, where fluency becomes even more critical for accessing the curriculum. It is not a high-stakes test but a valuable tool to secure strong mathematical foundations.

In 2024, 67% of eligble children taking the check passed with over 20 out of 25 marks.

End of Key stage 2 Results

Birchills is a wonderfully diverse community, and each year we welcome many new pupils who join us at different points throughout the school year. While we are proud to provide strong support for all children from the moment they arrive, pupils who join mid-year or mid-key stage often have had limited time with us to benefit from our curriculum, routines and teaching approaches. This can have a noticeable impact on our externally reported data, as national measures do not take account of how long a child has attended the school.

To ensure we have an accurate and fair picture of the progress being made at Birchills, we therefore record two sets of data:

Birchills Pure Data

This reflects the outcomes of children who have been with us for two years or more. It provides a clearer picture of the impact of our teaching, curriculum and improvement work, as these pupils have experienced sustained, high-quality education within our academy.
