Reading
The National Curriculum expects children in Year 2 to focus on fluent decoding, accurate reading of multi-syllable words and common exception words, and building comprehension through discussing plot, characters, and using punctuation for expression, moving from sounding out to automatic recognition, and developing a love for reading across diverse texts.
In Birchills we follow Ready Steady Read Together, our lessons follow the same teaching sequence and provides a detailed framework of how to move through the 3 step teaching sequence. Our lessons last 45 minutes and we have one lesson a day. Below is a breakdown of a typical lesson.
Writing
Maths
Year 2 maths emphasises fluency in number facts, applying skills to calculations, understanding fractions, measurement and geometry, and developing reasoning and problem-solving skills. At Birchills we follow Oak National Academy, this curriculum develops pupils understanding of mathematics over time so they become confident in identifying and perfoming the mathematics they need both at school and in their daily lives.
What maths looks like in Year Two.
'Reading for enjoyment helps a child create a habit of reading which in turn supports the development of childrens language and learning.' (National Literacy Trust)
Reading for Pleasure
Here at Birchills we are an advocate for Reading for Pleasure and encourage children to choose a book and enjoy reading it. Reading for pleasure can lower stress levels, increase empathy and improve academic success. We ask that you encourage your child to read at home and create a love for reading.
