Year 4 expectations emphasise growing independence, with pupils reading fluently and with expression, using more complex punctuation, organising writing into paragraphs, and mastering multiplication tables up to 12×12.

Reading

In Year 4, the National Curriculum requires pupils to read fluently and accurately, with good understanding and expression. They should read a wide range of age-appropriate fiction, poetry, plays, and non-fiction, and develop deeper comprehension by explaining meanings of words in context, summarising key ideas, making inferences, and justifying opinions using evidence from the text. Pupils are also expected to read silently for sustained periods, retrieve information from non-fiction, and develop a positive, independent reading habit.

In Birchills we follow Ready Steady Read Together, our lessons follow the same teaching sequence and provides a detailed framework of how to move through the 3 step teaching sequence. Our lessons last 45 minutes and we have one lesson a day. Below is a breakdown of a typical lesson.

Writing

Year 4 writing focuses on developing clear, accurate, and structured writing, using varied sentence structures, correct punctuation and spelling, fluent handwriting, and skills in planning, revising, and editing to build independent and confident writers.

At Birchills we want all children to enjoy becoming writers so we cultivate a love of writing through our vocabulary rich and high quality literature using Ready Steady Write by Literacy Counts. Ready Stedy Write uses an engagiong and vocabulary rich texts to create a wealth of writing oportunities. The Books we use in Year Four are:

Lost Happy Endings : Duffy, Carol Ann ...

Maths

Year 4 maths focuses on developing fluency in four operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Mastering multipliation tables up to 12x2 and understanding place value. Some of our key topics are: solving problems with whole numbers and simple fractions, using measuring instruments, drawing and describing shapes and adding and subtracting digits with up to 3 numbers.

At Birchills we follow Oak National Academy, this curriculum develops   pupils understanding of mathematics over time so they  become confident in identifying and perfoming the mathematics they need both at school and in their daily lives.

Reading for Pleasure

Here at Birchills we are an advocate for Reading for Pleasure and encourage children to choose a book and enjoy reading it. Reading for pleasure can lower stress levels, increase empathy and improve academic success. We ask that you encourage your child to read at home and create a love for reading.
