Mastering Number at Reception
and Key Stage 1
Supporting pupils to develop good number sense
Mastering Number in Reception and Key Stage 1
We are proud to be a Mastering Number school in Reception and Key Stage 1, working in partnership with our local Maths Hub. The Mastering Number programme is designed to secure firm foundations in early mathematics by developing children’s understanding of number, rather than simply learning to count or calculate.
Through carefully structured daily sessions, children develop a deep understanding of numbers to 10 and beyond. They explore how numbers are composed, how they can be partitioned, and how they relate to one another. Concrete resources, visual representations and mathematical language are used to help children see numbers and make sense of them.
The programme places strong emphasis on subitising (recognising quantities without counting), number bonds, and fluency with addition and subtraction. Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, spot patterns and make connections, building confidence and enjoyment in mathematics.
The Impact
As a result of Mastering Number:
-
Children develop secure number sense and confidence with numbers
-
Pupils become fluent in recalling key number facts
-
Children can reason, explain their thinking and solve problems more effectively
-
Strong foundations are laid for success in mathematics throughout Key Stage 2 and beyond
How Parents Can Help at Home
Parents play an important role in supporting children’s mathematical development. Simple, everyday activities can make a big difference:
-
Talk about numbers in daily life, such as counting steps, sharing snacks or spotting numbers on doors and buses
-
Encourage quick recognition of amounts (for example, dice patterns or small groups of objects) rather than counting one by one
-
Explore number bonds, such as asking “How many ways can we make 5?”
-
Ask children to explain their thinking, using questions like “How do you know?”
-
Keep it positive and playful — confidence and enjoyment are key to success in maths
There is no need to rush ahead or use formal written methods at this stage. Building understanding is far more important than speed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn’t my child bring home lots of worksheets?
In the early years, maths learning is most effective through talk, practical activities and exploration. Mastering Number focuses on deep understanding rather than written recording.
Why are children encouraged to explain their answers?
Talking about maths helps children organise their thinking, make connections and develop confidence. Explaining ideas is a key part of understanding, not an extra task.
Will my child still learn to calculate quickly?
Yes. Secure understanding of number supports fluency. Children who understand how numbers work are more confident and efficient when calculating.
What if my child finds maths difficult?
Mastering Number is designed so that all children can succeed. Lessons move in small steps, with support and challenge built in, helping every child to make progress.
How does this support later learning?
Strong number sense in Reception and Key Stage 1 is essential for success in Key Stage 2. Mastering Number ensures children are well prepared for future mathematical learning.
