The National Curriculum states in Year Three children focus on strengthening core skills by progressing from basic phonics to deeper reading comprehension, developing more structured writing, improving maths fluency and calculation, and exploring a wider curriculum. Children grow in independence, joined handwriting, problem-solving, and critical thinking as they prepare for Key Stage 2.

Key Expectations

Indepence- Children are to become more independent and become less reliant on phonics and explore broader subjects.

Communication- Children are expected to explain understanding, discuss texts, and record information from non-fiction texts.

Reading

The National Curriculim states that in Year 3, pupils should read age-appropriate books fluently and accurately, decode unfamiliar words confidently, and focus on comprehension, vocabulary development, and enjoyment of a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, while beginning to read silently and justify their views.

In Birchills we follow Ready Steady Read Together, our lessons follow the same teaching sequence and provides a detailed framework of how to move through the 3 step teaching sequence. Our lessons last 45 minutes and we have one lesson a day. Below is a breakdown of a typical lesson.

Writing

Year Three writing focuses on developing confidence, structure, and accuracy in pupils’ writing. Children are expected to write for a range of purposes and audiences, organise their ideas into clear paragraphs, and use a wider variety of sentence structures and vocabulary. They should apply spelling rules more consistently, including prefixes, suffixes, and apostrophes, and use punctuation accurately (such as inverted commas, commas, and full stops). Handwriting should be fluent and legible, with joined writing used consistently. Overall, the aim is to help pupils write clearly, cohesively, and with increasing independence.

At Birchills we want all children to enjoy becoming writers so we cultivate a love of writing through our vocabulary rich and high quality literature using Ready Steady Write by Literacy Counts. Ready Stedy Write uses an engagiong and vocabulary rich texts to create a wealth of writing oportunities. The Books we use in Year Three are:

The Rhythm of the Rain: Amazon.co.uk ...

Maths

Year 3 maths expectations focus on securing number fluency and applying it to calculations, reasoning, and problem-solving. Pupils should confidently use place value to at least 1,000, recall and use multiplication and division facts (including the 3, 4, and 8 times tables), and add and subtract numbers mentally and using formal written methods. They develop understanding of fractions, measurement, and geometry, including properties of shapes and data handling, while explaining their thinking and solving problems in a range of contexts. At Birchills we follow Oak National Academy, this curriculum develops   pupils understanding of mathematics over time so they  become confident in identifying and perfoming the mathematics they need both at school and in their daily lives.

What maths looks like in Year Three

'Reading for pleasure can help to enrich a child's awareness of the world and develop empathy.' (The National Literacy Trust)

Reading for Pleasure

Here at Birchills we are an advocate for Reading for Pleasure and encourage children to choose a book and enjoy reading it. Reading for pleasure can lower stress levels, increase empathy and improve academic success. We ask that you encourage your child to read at home and create a love for reading.
